Overview

Learners: Quality assurance technicians in a cannery

My Role: Instructional Designer

Tools Used: Canva, Google Docs, Powerpoint, Twine

During my second semester at Boise State University in my master's program, I created a design document and a visual storyboard for a scenario-based e-learning module that never went into full-development.

Based on my own experiences as a quality assurance lead and team trainer in an Alaskan cannery, I worked as the primary SME on this project and received additional input from my colleagues in the industry. I crafted a scenario that throws new quality assurance hires onto the production line and exposes them to real challenges and consequences. It should be noted that the production process detailed here is fictionalized and significantly different from the real thing. It should not be understood as an accurate representation of what happens inside of any specific cannery in the real world.

If this were a real project implemented in an actual cannery, I would use it as both preparation and review for an instructor-led cognitive apprenticeship. Furthermore, if it were a real project I would have access to more resources; instead of creating the visuals in Canva I would lobby for a budget to create video and/or photos of the site and production process. Realistic depictions of the scenarios would be shown in conjunction with auditory feedback, which would maximize learning per Mayer's Multimedia and Modality principles.
